What is The Common Core?

The Common Core is a state led initiative that provides standards students are expected to meet to successfully compete in a global society.  The standards are designed to reflect real world issues and the knowledge and skills required for successful students.  North Carolina was among the first states to adopt the Common Core on June 4, 2010.  The Common Core Standards are benchmarked to international standards to guarantee students are prepared to compete in a global economy.  While making the transition to the new standards, the current SCOS will continue to be taught and tested during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years.  The Common Core Standards will be taught and assessed in schools during the 2012-13 school years. Additional information can be found by exploring the Common Core State Standards: Resources for Superintendents and Curriculum Specialist Website.
